Freethought ... or Not

Dawkins Lecture

At RichardDawkins.net there's a link to a video lecture by the man himself.

Summary:

Richard Dawkins believes science's ability to admit ignorance is one of its greatest strengths. On the flip side, he proposes that faith remains arrogant and all too certain of its validity without any rational set of proofs.

As usual, Mr. Dawkins is in fine form: witty, eloquent and convincing. Well worth the investment of 24 minutes.

This Sunday: Speaking in Tongues

I sat in front of my computer entranced and repulsed by the film Jesus Camp earlier this week. The film is a dramatic depiction of Evangelicals indoctrinating their children with Christian religious beliefs in what I would describe as a cult-like fashion. We see children being home schooled with the pseudo-science of Young Earth Creationism. We see children being admonished that they are sinners and shamed into admitting their sins in front of their peers. We see children being forced to worship a “false idol”, a life sized cardboard cutout of George Bush. We see children believing that they are soldiers in "God’s Army". We see children being told about the evils of abortion through the use of fetus dolls. We see children approaching strangers on the street to spread the word of the God: witnessing. We see children being worked into tear streaming trance like states by the camp's nauseating Pastor. We see children practicing the strange phenomenon of speaking in tongues.

Enough to make you Believe?

Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt find mine likeness upon the arse of thy mutt and it will move in an animated fashion.

Do you Believe now?

Nice one by Doug? at dougfolkerts.com. Do you believe?

This Sunday: School Prayer

I just read an article via Friendly Atheist about a true American hero by the name of Ellery Schempp. As a high school student in Pennsylvania during the 1950s, Mr. Schempp felt that the daily bible reading he was forced to participate in was against his constitutional rights. You can read his personal account of how he successfully sued his school district thus bringing an end to daily bible reading in U.S. public schools. Details of the Supreme Court case can be read at Wikipedia.

Spring Shower

Blog Against Theocracy

I have some of my most creative thinking moments in the shower. Unfortunately, by the time I get out, dried off and dressed, most of what I had thought of is only a memory, somewhat disorganized and fuzzy at best. I’ve often wondered if others experience this as I do. Anyway, the following is an attempt at reconstructing some thoughts about Atheism that occurred to me during this morning’s shower.

A controversy is brewing over the way Atheists present their case for Atheism by criticizing religious people. It has been said that, in their criticism, Atheists showgreat disrespect for theists. Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris in particular have been accused of being rude and disrespectful in their relentless attacks on belief. These two have even been referred to as militant or Fundamentalist Atheists.

It brings back reminders to me of how torturous one measly hour in a mythology temple can be!
