Freethought ... or Not

Our very own "Creation Science Museum"

God certainly is a persistent omniscient being, and has been at work here in Canada on multiple fronts. We now have, thanks to God, our very own Big Valley Creation Science Museum, located in Big Valley, AB. So God definitely isn't on vacation from smiting, he's just busy giving people outlets for their personal religious agendas in Alberta.

This Sunday: The Miracle Channel

Did you know that Canada has its very own Evangelical television channel? I suppose that us folks in the Eastern part of the country could be excused if we haven’t discovered the Lethbridge, Alberta based Miracle Channel. But wait, here's a testimonial from a viewer in Ontario:

I am really impressed with the quality of your programming. It is very professional but not flashy or showy. It is so nice to hear what God is doing in Canada. I also enjoy discovering Canadian ministries. I have learnt so much watching your programs and have certainly being challenged in my walk with God. I especially enjoy LifeLine and the call-in program. It is very professional and non-confrontational and he addresses current issues in a non-traditional way.
    - C.N., Ontario

Jesus, where have I been? I guess I'm out of the loop as I've haven't heard what "God has been doing in Canada". I didn't know God was in Canada. What is God doing in Canada anyway? Maybe he's come up here on vacation from the USA cottaging in the Muskokas or maybe mountain climbing in British Columbia. Thanks goes to Buckdog for bringing the Miracle Channel to this Canadian heathen's attention.

Bill Moyers Journal: Regent University

If you don't like the laws of the land, start your own university law school to train the future leaders to make the laws as you wish them to be. That's exactly what Christian Evangelist Pat Robertson had in mind when he started Regent University School of Law. From the Regent University Mission Statement:

Our mission is to provide excellent graduate and undergraduate education from a global, biblical perspective in pivotal professions to equip Christian leaders to change the world, and to be a leading center of Christian thought and action.

In the May 11, 2007 edition of his video journal at PBS, Bill Moyers paints a pretty clear picture of the goals of Mr. Robertson and his university. Mr. Robertson does not believe in separation of church and state, he thinks that biblical law should be the law of the land. Watch Bill Moyers Journal. Any questions?

Pat Condell

It would seem that Pat Condell has absolutely nothing good to say about religion, Christian or otherwise. I'm sure that Mr. Condell would be delighted if you were to view a couple of his YouTube monologues. My favourites are What do I believe? and In Jesus' name.

This Sunday: Life and Liberty for All Who Believe

Via Red State Rabble, Burt Lancaster narrates the documentary, Life and Liberty for All Who Believe, on the rise of Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority. Shot in the 1980s, it's a great little 25 minute "history lesson" on the religious right. (Third post on Monday May 21/07)

Biblical Literacy: The Not So Hidden Agenda

The issue of biblical literacy has been bothering me since it came to the forefront of the news media earlier this spring. I’ve attempted to piece together some thoughts about the issue that have been simmering in my mind for a few weeks now.

Who are the people concerned that the bible needs to be taught in the public school system? Simple logic would dictate that it would be a group with a vested interest - someone like Evangelical Christians. Has any group other than Evangelical Christians asked for biblical literacy to be taught? I can’t imagine that other faith groups or unbelievers of any stripe would have asked for this. Why would Evangelical Christians, who are supposedly already well versed in the teachings of the bible, want to promote teaching biblical literacy? Do they really think that their real agenda is not blatantly obvious?

This Sunday: God's Wireless Network

Many Evangelical Christians claim to hear the voice of God . Apparently God speaks to them directly. Paradoxically, they look to science to lend support for their claims. The relatively recent science of Neurotheology almost has it right with the suggestion that humans are hardwired for religion. I’d like to suggest that we take this idea one step further as I believe I have just figured out how God is able to speak to Evangelicals. He does it through a wireless network! I can’t believe that someone hasn’t already figured this out. Why would God fool around with hard wiring when he’s got wireless capability? My theory goes something like this:

Mark Crispin Miller

Here's a short (8-1/2 minutes) video entitled Laughing In The Dark by Mark Crispin Miller. Mr Miller paints a very clear picture regarding the true goal of Evangelical Christians as they work towards domination of the US government. He suggests that the situation should be taken very seriously by secularists rather than being viewed as comedy as it is presented by Bill Maher and Jon Stewart.

Time Magazine: The Case for Teaching "The" Bible?

I saw this article, The Case for Teaching The Bible, by David van Biema, a few weeks ago in an office, had a cursory glance at it and decided I had to write something about it. Being on the front page of Time Magazine, that's definitely a lot of eyeballs, so I've got to say something...

This Sunday: Creationist Science

It’s amazing what Evangelical Christians will try to pass off as science. Don’t ask me how, but I came across this Young Earth Creationism website: Creation Worldview Ministries. It would appear that the organization is led by a gentleman with the title Missionary Dr. Grady S. McMurtry Full-time International Creation Emissary Biblical Scientific Creationist Apologist. How’s that for an impressive title? A little self-aggrandizement? Anyway, the site is billed as "An Educational Missionary Organization". It would seem that the "Education" being referred to here is that of refuting anything and everything of a scientific nature that does not fit with the myths of the Bible.
