Jay's Pick

Jay's Pick - The Delgados' No Danger

Thought I'd post a Jay's Pick, and it just so happens that there's a video to go with the tune that is in keeping with the theme of this site.

The song is No Danger by The Delgados, a now disbanded but eminently influential band from Scotland that saw its heyday in the beginning of this decade. One commenter points out on the YouTube page that it is too bad there are so many people in the world with "cloth ears"--the bitrate leaves much to be desired. However, at proper CD quality the track sounds superb. I highly recommend the whole album The Great Eastern from 2000. Worth finding a copy.

Craig Smith - Getaway Car

Heard a cool song on CBC this afternoon. The program was Definitely Not the Opera and the song was by one Craig Smith.

The CBC Radio 3 website writes the following about Craig:

The Kitchener, Ontario native was lured at a young age from his religious upbringing, and developed a taste for the darker side of life by way of the rock music secretly played from a bedroom cassette player.

.:The River Pilots:.

I do not know anything about .:The River Pilots:. except that I like their song Vesper.. Ok, well, I met one of their members which is how I found out about the group, but still...

Listen to the spatial depth and rhythmic complexity of the track. The clarity of each instrument is remarkable and the group sound very well accustomed to playing challenging but memorable songs together.

You'll want to go see this Friday night

Stranger Than Fiction it's called, and Will Ferrell and the rest of the cast do an excellent job. Take the family too as it's rated PG-13, and I must say, there's something in it for everyone. I just saw it tonight at an advance screening and left thinking unequivocally: "must see." It opens Friday so times aren't listed yet on cinemaclock, but keep checking that link and they will be soon enough.

And yeah, no reason why I can't have two Jay's picks in one day, in multiple categories at that :)

Jay's Pick Nov 7/06

These Flowers by Martha Wainwright is one of the more unique and melancholy (in a good way!) songs that I've heard in a while. It could be that I woke up to the song on the radio this morning, but after quite a few repeated listens I'm growing *more* enamoured of the song, not less as I expected. Also listen to When The Day Is Short.

From wikipedia:

"Martha McGarrigle Wainwright was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and the sister of Rufus Wainwright.
She has frequently appeared on recordings by her family members, and has released several independent EPs. Her full length self-titled debut was released in 2005 by Drowned In Sound, and debuted at number 18 on the Canadian album sales charts."

By The Boy Least Likely To, this song Glad I Hiteched My Apple Wagon to Your Star, has a contagious exuberance about it, in part due to the totally nonsensical verses (and chorus for that matter), overlaid with a silly warbling synth sound reminiscent of 80's synth pop. A fun tune.
