Most Linux distributions have a neat little program that can be installed called fortune. It will give a short little inspirational quote, a saying, poetry, a joke, etc. The pool of fortunes is over 16,000 with a base install on Debian Etch.
Now the interesting thing is that there is another fortune package called fortunes-off. Offcolor, offbeat, offensive. Use your imagination. Being immune to all manner of inappropriate material, I of course installed it, and lo and behold, the first "offensive" (and randomly chosen) quote was as follows:
And for all you non-believers out there, here's one atheist's account of his "conversion" to Linux. Maybe we atheists could learn from those religiously oriented Linux distributions; we atheist Linux users should get together and create our own distro, with all manner of fortunes. Random numbers from /dev/random or /dev/urandom would be used to choose fortunes, and that would be the extent of our experience with any type of mysticism. Any takers?
Joke?
The Ubuntu Christian edition is a joke, right? Right? If an Ubuntu Atheist edition comes to fruition it'll have a Darwin Fish in the logo rather than that damned Jesusfish.
There is even an Ubuntu
There is even an Ubuntu Muslim edition. All they really have is a Bible/Qur'an reader and a pray time. I guess regular Ubuntu would be Atheist version because it hasn't seen the light yet.
Secular Edition?
What Light? I think you're right Myles, but perhaps we should call the regular edition of Ubuntu the Secular Edition.
Fortune -o
There is a package of atheism fortunes that was maintained by Wayne Aiken, the North Carolina director for American Atheists. This is included in the fortune-off additional quotes. Under Debian-based distributions that is installed under /usr/share/games/fortunes/off
The last version to my knowledge is from 2001. It wouldn't be a bad idea for someone to add quotes with all of the popular atheism books that have come out.
