These Flowers by Martha Wainwright is one of the more unique and melancholy (in a good way!) songs that I've heard in a while. It could be that I woke up to the song on the radio this morning, but after quite a few repeated listens I'm growing *more* enamoured of the song, not less as I expected. Also listen to When The Day Is Short.

From wikipedia:

"Martha McGarrigle Wainwright was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and the sister of Rufus Wainwright.
She has frequently appeared on recordings by her family members, and has released several independent EPs. Her full length self-titled debut was released in 2005 by Drowned In Sound, and debuted at number 18 on the Canadian album sales charts."

Right, thaaaatttt Martha Wainwright :)

She's also got a couple songs in the film about Leonard Cohen called Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man. Check out the cast! I'm going to have to rent that one. View the trailer and listen to a few more or her songs on her myspace page.

Would have been pretty cool to see her at/on this concert/tour with Neko Case too.

Of the 2 songs, I like When

Of the 2 songs, I like When The Day Is Short better; I like the lively feel of the song. I guess I generally tend to lean towards songs with more instrumentation. Or, it could be that I'm just not in enough of a state of melancholy to appreciate These Flowers. Although it is raining as I type this. :)
